How to Use This Square Footage Calculator
Use this calculator to find the square footage, square inches, square meters, square yards, or square centimeters for buildings, rooms, gardens, or construction projects. Calculate area measurements for flooring, carpet, tiling, landscaping, or any project where you need to estimate area and material requirements.
Supported Shapes
This calculator supports four common shapes:
- Rectangle: Enter width and height to calculate area (Length × Width)
- Square: Enter side length to calculate area (Side × Side)
- Triangle: Enter base and height to calculate area (½ × Base × Height)
- Circle: Enter radius to calculate area (π × Radius²)
Measurement Units
Enter measurements in US customary or metric units:
- US Units: Inches (in), Feet (ft), Yards (yd)
- Metric Units: Centimeters (cm), Meters (m)
You can also enter decimal values. For example, if you have a measurement of 7’3″, enter it as 7.25 feet (since 3″ ÷ 12″ = 0.25 ft). If you have 245 cm, you can enter it as 2.45 meters.
Calculating Square Footage
Square footage is area expressed in square feet. For rectangular areas like rooms:
- Measure: Measure the length and width of your area
- Calculate: Multiply length × width to get area in square feet
- Irregular Shapes: For L-shaped or complex areas, divide them into rectangles and calculate each section separately, then add the results together

Tips for Accurate Measurements
- Always measure twice to ensure accuracy
- For rooms, measure at multiple points as walls may not be perfectly straight
